Sainik School Tilaiya is situated close to the Tilaiya Dam in the Koderma district and is 18 kilometres from the closest railhead, Koderma, on the Howrah-Delhi chord line, closer to Gaya. The school is set against the picturesque background of the Chota Nagpur Plateau and Tilaiya Dam.

Located in the serene surroundings of Tilaiya Dam, Jharkhand, Tilaiya Sainik School was established in 1963. It was the first Sainik School to be established in the eastern region of India, with the goal of providing quality education and military training to young boys from Jharkhand and Bihar.

The 12 Sainik Schools of the network of 33 Sainik Schools that stretched the length and width of the nation were founded on September 16, 1963. The great cultural ambassador, former Union Minister of Defence, Late V K Krishna Menon, and the forward-thinking Chief Minister of Bihar, Late K B Sahay, collaborated to establish this budding, young school. 

Former Principal Lt Col LEG Smith was tasked with turning ideas from blueprints into reality. So was founded SST, which went on to become a hallmark of the state’s and country’s academic landscape. It is currently one of the top nurseries for NDA.

The school was established under the auspices of the Sainik Schools Society, which the government of India set up to promote the growth and development of young boys by providing them with a disciplined and conducive environment. The aim of the society was to create future leaders for the armed forces of India, as well as for other professions.

The first batch of students enrolled in Tilaiya Sainik School in 1963, with the school being inaugurated by the then-Chief Minister of Bihar, Sri Krishna Singh. Since then, the school has gone from strength to strength, with an ever-increasing number of students enrolling each year.

Tilaiya Sainik School has always been dedicated to providing a high-quality education to its students. The school is affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and offers classes from VI to XII. It was one of the five Sainik Schools in the nation to accept girls in 2020. The school welcomed its first female batch during the academic year 2021–2022.

In addition to academic excellence, the school also places great emphasis on physical fitness and military training. This is achieved through a rigorous daily routine, including physical training, drills, and other military exercises.

The school’s infrastructure is top-notch, with well-equipped classrooms, laboratories, and a library. The campus also includes facilities for sports and extracurricular activities, such as football, basketball, volleyball, and cricket. The school also has a well-stocked gymnasium, as well as facilities for martial arts and yoga.

SST has been effectively pursuing its objective of sending cadets to the Defence Forces since its founding. Tilaiya Sainik School has twice been awarded the Defence Minister Award for sending the greatest number of cadets to the NDA. Until now, the school has sent 700 cadets to the National Defence Academy; some of them have attained Lt. General and equivalent posts in the Indian Armed Forces.

Over the years, Tilaiya Sainik School has produced numerous successful leaders in various fields. Many of its alums have gone on to serve in the Indian armed forces, while others have excelled in the fields of medicine, engineering, law, and business.
