What are New Sainik Schools?

The Indian education system has always placed a strong emphasis on discipline and patriotism, and the Sainik schools are a perfect embodiment of this ethos. These institutions were established to prepare young boys and girls to join the armed forces and serve their country.

The Government of India approved an initiative to establish 100 new Sainik Schools under the Sainik Schools Society, Ministry of Defence, on an affiliation basis through a collaboration of states, non-governmental organisations, and private partners.

These schools are affiliated with the Sainik Schools Society (SSS) to create a system that combines academic excellence with a degree of discipline to provide a greater emphasis on value-based education, allowing children to develop pride in the nation’s rich culture and heritage.

The initiative was started to meet the rising demand for Sainik Schools while also creating an academically strong, culturally aware, intellectually adept, confident, highly skilled, multi-dimensional, patriotic, self-reliant, youth community with leadership qualities focused on providing the utmost priority to the nation.

The aim of these new schools is to provide quality education to children from rural and remote areas and to increase the number of students joining the armed forces.

How Do New Sainik Schools Function?

The New Sainik schools will follow the same curriculum and admission process as the existing schools. They also offer the same benefits, including military training, leadership development, and career opportunities.

The government plans to set up one Sainik school in each district of the country to ensure that every child has access to quality education and training.

The initiative envisions the establishment of all necessary infrastructure, faculty, and other requirements for NSS in collaboration mode by the entity establishing and operating the School (State Govt./Private Sector/Trust/Society/NGO).

There is no provision for the Government of India to incur expenditure in this regard.

However, the Government of India will provide annual support on a Merit-Cum-Means basis of up to 50% fee support (subject to a maximum of Rs 40,000/- per student per annum) for up to 50% of class strength (subject to a maximum of 50 students per class per annum) for the approved school through Sainik Schools Society.

Benefits of New Sainik Schools

  • Military Training: The primary benefit of New Sainik schools is that they offer military training to the students. The students are trained in physical fitness, weapon handling, and military drills. This training not only prepares them for a career in the armed forces but also instils a sense of discipline and responsibility in them.
  • Leadership Skills: The NSS also focus on developing leadership skills among the students. They are encouraged to take up responsibilities and lead by example. This helps them in developing their communication and management skills, which are essential for any profession.
  • Patriotism: The schools promote patriotism among the students. They are taught about the history and culture of India and are encouraged to participate in national events and activities. This instils a sense of pride and respect for the country in the students.
  • Career Opportunities: The NSS provide excellent career opportunities to students. They can join the armed forces or other government organizations after completing their education. The military training and leadership skills learned at these schools also prepare them for successful careers in the private sector.

How to Apply for New Sainik Schools

Applicants must take the AISSEE and pass it in order to be considered for admission to New Sainik Schools. After the results are announced, those who qualify must submit an application for e-counselling.

The rank attained in the AISSEE will determine admission. There are two ways to enter a recognised NSS:

40% route: The All India Merit List rank will be used to fill at least 40% of the available seats in recognised NSSs. Category and domicile are not taken into account for this Merit List.

During counselling, candidates may choose from any accredited NSS in India.

60% route: Students who are currently enrolled in recognised NSSs may occupy up to 60% of the available seats. These will be filled based on the student’s performance on the school-specific merit list. Category and domicile are not taken into account for this Merit List.

For admission under this route, candidates are deemed to have chosen the approved NSS where they are currently studying (as indicated on their application form).

Conclusion

The government’s decision to open NSS across the country is a step in the right direction, as it will provide quality education to children from remote and rural areas and increase the number of students joining the armed forces.

The new Sainik schools will undoubtedly contribute to the growth and development of the country by producing disciplined and responsible citizens.
